Genre was once a practical tool for organizing record shops and programming radio stations but what is Pop music today? Mainstream pop has evolved to be inclusive of many more musical influences. Join radio disc jockey J Stevens and leading industry professionals as they unpack the state of pop music today, where the genre originated and where it’s headed.

Moderator: J. Stevens

J Stevens is the Music Director/Assistant Program Director at 97.5 Virgin Radio in London, Ontario. In addition to hosting the #1 rated afternoon show in the city, he also does double duty as MD/APD/Midday host at sister station, 93.9 Virgin Radio in Windsor (where he lived & worked prior to making London home in 2016).

In his 20+ year career (which has taken him from his roots in Chatham to stops in Midwestern Ontario, as well) he’s developed relationships with some of the biggest artists in the world, spanning multiple genres. While “pop” may be the current format he’s helping to program, hacking his personal playlist would show he’s constantly listening to anything from Martha & The Vandellas to Metallica.

While he’s been a finalist multiple times for CMW’s Music Director of the Year & has hosted many high profile interviews/events, J claims any success he’s had has come thanks to hard work, adapting to an ever-changing landscape & learning about people.

Eric Ratz

Eric Ratz is a GRAMMY and JUNO Award winning Producer, Engineer and Mixer with over 20 years of experience. Eric is known for big sounding mixes and rock productions. He has worked with Canada’s most successful and influential rock bands including Arkells, Big Wreck, Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, Danko Jones and Monster Truck. He has been nominated for 11 JUNO awards in both the Producer and Recording Engineer categories. He has won Producer of the Year and twice won Engineer of the Year at the JUNOs. Eric is also a GRAMMY.

Matt Grady

Matt is a Canadian Producer and Engineer. Matt has strong ties to London Ontario both through working as Chief Engineer at legendary EMAC Recording Studios for more than a decade, and his role as Professor of Music Industry Arts at Fanshawe College. A rabid fan and disciple of rock and roll, he has had the good fortune to have been taught and worked alongside legends like Jack Richardson who taught him the skills to harbour a new generation of Canadian talent. Matt continues to grow as a creative force; whether producing, engineering (Ivory Hours, The Pairs. The Jailbirds) or creating (Tandem Eagle, Manglor) his sound continues the old school traditions with new explosive energy.

Luke Roes

Luke Roes is a songwriter and producer primarily known for his work with Ivory Hours. He’s currently completing a concept album called ‘Welcome to my Head’ – a hair-raising collection of pop songs about recovering from an anxious breakdown.

India Coran

A proud Londoner, India has worked in the music industry as a radio promotion rep for over 10 years after attending UWO, Harris Institute for the Arts, and U of T. She represents both international and domestic artists to radio across Canada who are either independent or signed to major labels. Some well known clients have included Awolnation, Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach, Nickelback, Our Lady Peace, and The Trews. She has introduced new artists to radio who went on to secure major label deals such as The Lazys, The Motorleague, and Juno award winning pop sensation Neon Dreams. She can’t wait to see live music in town again, like Texas King at the London Music Hall!
