Genre was once a practical tool for organizing record shops and programming radio stations but what is Pop music today? Mainstream pop has evolved to be inclusive of many more musical influences. Join radio disc jockey J Stevens and leading industry professionals as they unpack the state of pop music today, where the genre originated and where it’s headed.
Moderator: J. Stevens
J Stevens is the Music Director/Assistant Program Director at 97.5 Virgin Radio in London, Ontario. In addition to hosting the #1 rated afternoon show in the city, he also does double duty as MD/APD/Midday host at sister station, 93.9 Virgin Radio in Windsor (where he lived & worked prior to making London home in 2016).
In his 20+ year career (which has taken him from his roots in Chatham to stops in Midwestern Ontario, as well) he’s developed relationships with some of the biggest artists in the world, spanning multiple genres. While “pop” may be the current format he’s helping to program, hacking his personal playlist would show he’s constantly listening to anything from Martha & The Vandellas to Metallica.
While he’s been a finalist multiple times for CMW’s Music Director of the Year & has hosted many high profile interviews/events, J claims any success he’s had has come thanks to hard work, adapting to an ever-changing landscape & learning about people.
